Sugar Production: Investors Plan to Make Nigeria Self-Sufficient

December 18, 2019

Investors are acquiring land and investing more in the production of sugar to make Nigeria self-sufficient in producing the commodity, the President and Chief Executive, Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has said. Dangote said this on the sidelines of a working visit of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, to Sunti Golden Sugar Estates in Mokwa, Niger State. He said producers of sugar were looking forward to achieving the kind of feat recorded in the production of cement in Nigeria. Dangote said, “What we are looking at is to see how we can achieve the same trajectory we had in cement. Sugar is a little bit more difficult because you have to consider the weather, land quality, irrigation and other things.” When asked if Nigeria could achieve self-sufficiency in sugar production, Dangote replied, “Of course, yes. I can see Nigeria achieving that but it is a question of land and the area because you cannot go to a place like Ondo, for example, to grow sugar.
